Artichoke processing equipment

Choose whole heads, hearts, bottoms or quarters before specifying trimming and sorting.

Crop guide · Artichoke preprocessing

Start with the retained product

Globe artichokes have layered bracts, a stem and a fibrous choke. Preparing hearts or bottoms differs from washing whole heads. Jerusalem artichokes are tubers requiring a different route. Raytec publishes artichoke sorting footage with prepared pieces; it is not a whole-head coring demonstration.

Compare washing, trimming or peeling, cutting, sorting, dewatering and packaging below. Attributed manufacturer images explain equipment roles. General family references require the actual crop configuration and a representative trial.

Choose the finished-product route

Whole heads

Inspect → trim stem → configured cleaning → drain → grade → pack.

Agree bract damage and head presentation.

Hearts or bottoms

Prepare → remove specified bracts/stem/choke → inspect retained tissue → rinse/drain → pack.

Show an accepted heart or bottom.

Quarters

Prepare retained heart/bottom → orient and quarter → inspect → drain → dose.

Separate size, colour and fibrous-material checks.

Agree pre-cleaning, trimming, cutting and final-wash order for the incoming material and intended use. These routes are specification aids, not universal process settings.

Washing: distinguish layered heads from prepared pieces

KRONEN HEWA 3800 · Manufacturer equipment image; general washing-family reference

KRONEN HEWA 3800

KRONEN washing-family reference, not a confirmed artichoke configuration. Agree whether a wet route is needed, then trial retention, movement and supported discharge.

Heads and exposed hearts retain water differently. Specify incoming debris, support and cleaning order relative to trimming. A general washer does not remove the choke or establish a colour-preservation process.

Include water filling and management, draining, rinse arrangements and cleaning access in the quotation. No chemical dose, microbial reduction or ready-to-eat result is established by a machine image or application list.

Trimming: name the retained heart or bottom

KRONEN · Manufacturer workstation photograph; general preparation

KRONEN

KRONEN supported manual preparation with separate waste collection. Define retained artichoke tissue before selecting automation; this is not an automatic trimmer.

Define tough-bract, stem and choke removal with accepted samples. Ferm lists artichoke processing equipment; the manual station photograph explains supported preparation. A sorter does not perform these upstream removal duties. Obtain a machine-specific trial.

Cutting: support hearts before quartering

KRONEN GS 10-2 · Manufacturer equipment reference

KRONEN GS 10-2

KRONEN general cutting-family reference, separate from any other maker in the film. Trial actual artichoke support, orientation and supplied tooling.

Specify hearts, bottoms, quarters or slices. Check orientation and fragmentation with the offered tooling. The general cutting-family image does not establish automatic artichoke coring, choke removal or complete heart preparation.

Sorting: sort prepared pieces against defined defects

Raytec RAYNBOW

Raytec equipment rendering. The linked artichoke film shows prepared pieces, not whole-head coring. Confirm presentation, visible-defect brief and useful product in rejects.

Raytec links RAYNBOW artichoke sorting footage. The inspected scene shows prepared pale-green pieces spreading at a transfer. Its equipment rendering identifies the sorter family, not a measured rejection result. Trial visible defects, presentation and useful product in rejects.

Dewatering: check water trapped between layers

Assess the retained form after drainage and a realistic hold. Heads, hearts and quarters need different support. Separate drainage from cooking or preservation; a leafy centrifuge is not assumed suitable for every layered product.

Agree the free-water and damage assessment after a realistic hold, then check the next transfer and doser. Surface-water removal differs from thermal drying, cooking and sterilisation.

Packaging: keep whole-head and ingredient packs distinct

KRONEN FLEX L vertical bagging machine
KRONEN FLEX L · Manufacturer equipment reference; feeding, pack and options need confirmation

KRONEN FLEX L

General bagging-family reference. Confirm actual artichoke feeding, portion, film and seals; no crop-specific doser, gas recipe or shelf-life result is established.

Whole heads may need supported trays or cartons; hearts and quarters need compatible portioning. Confirm film, liquid carryover and seals. The bagger reference does not establish jar filling, canning or a preserved product.

If MAP is proposed, obtain the exact gas-handling hardware, film, seals and distribution brief. A general bagger does not establish a gas recipe, shelf life or every optional configuration.

Watch prepared artichoke pieces spread at the transfer

Raytec identifies artichoke sorting. This is prepared-piece presentation, not whole-head coring or bract removal. Request a trial with your accepted defects and retained form rather than inferring sorting accuracy.

  • Around 0:18: Pale-green prepared pieces fall from a roller outfeed and spread across a wide perforated platform.

Current manufacturer links and source identity were checked. Confirm the offered version and configuration separately from historical demonstration footage. No crop capacity, yield, cleaning, damage or shelf-life guarantee is inferred from the film.

Prepare an artichoke equipment trial brief

  1. Bring representative input: variety, maturity, size, incoming condition and seasonal variation.
  2. Show accepted and rejected samples: retained skin, leaf, stem, head or cut form, useful rework and finished pack.
  3. Record useful output: trim/peel loss, damage, fines, missed defects, free water and rejected packs.
  4. Test interfaces: product supports, drops, screens, drainage, dose control, stops and restart.
  5. Confirm supplied configuration: safe access, guards, tooling, water circuits, utilities, cleaning and training.

Questions before choosing artichoke equipment

Does the Raytec video show automatic heart preparation?

No. It shows a sorting reference for prepared pieces. Bract removal, choke removal and preparing hearts or bottoms are upstream duties.
