Crop guide · Edamame preprocessing
Start with the retained product
Edamame can be supplied in intact pods or as shelled young soybeans. Removing pods from a harvested plant is different from opening those pods. PSS identifies P-78 and P-478 pod-opening machines; its FAQ states that the standard application is boiled edamame and that raw beans require consultation. Do not present this cooked-input reference as proof of a raw shelling line.
Compare washing, trimming or peeling, cutting, sorting, dewatering and packaging below. Attributed manufacturer images explain equipment roles. General family references require the actual crop configuration and a representative trial.
Choose the finished-product route
Intact pods
Remove pods from branches if needed → inspect → configured wash → trim as required → drain → grade/pack.
Preserve the pod when it is the intended product.
Shelled cooked beans
Separately specified cooking and cooling → suitable pod opener → separate empty pods → inspect beans → portion.
PSS lists boiled input; raw-input suitability is not assumed.
Raw shelled ingredients
Inspect and clean pods → supplier-confirmed raw shelling → pod separation → inspect/drain → downstream process.
Obtain an actual raw-edamame test rather than copying cooked-input settings.
Agree pre-cleaning, trimming, cutting and final-wash order for the incoming material and intended use. These routes are specification aids, not universal process settings.
Washing: separate field debris from clean product

KRONEN HEWA 3800
General washing-family reference, not a confirmed edamame configuration. Confirm retention, water movement, loading and supported outfeed for the chosen route.
Define whether incoming material contains branches or detached pods. Test pod hairs, loose plant material and screen retention. A general washer does not detach pods from branches or validate a cooked-product hygiene process; keep upstream and downstream handling briefs separate.
Include water filling and management, draining, rinse arrangements and cleaning access in the quotation. No chemical dose, microbial reduction or ready-to-eat result is established by a machine image or application list.
Trimming: distinguish detaching pods from opening pods

PSS P-78
The photograph shows PSS P-78; the film shows P-478. PSS specifies boiled edamame as standard input. Consult for raw beans; plant depodding and seed-skin removal are different duties.
A plant depodder retains intact pods; a sheller opens them to retain beans. PSS describes separate bean and empty-pod discharge with seed skins retained. Its standard reference is boiled edamame, with raw input subject to consultation. Confirm the required product and input state before choosing either machine.
Cutting: avoid a cutter when whole beans are wanted
Intact pods and shelled whole beans bypass a vegetable cross-cutter. Trim specified pod ends on the pod route only. Broken cotyledons and fragments are losses to assess during shelling, not automatically an intended cut ingredient.
Sorting: inspect the retained product after separation

Herbort Inspection Belt 85
Manual inspection reference. Confirm presentation and separate rejects for edamame. It does not establish optical grading or internal-defect detection.
For whole pods, agree size, fill and visible condition. For shelled beans, check pod fragments, retained skins, breakage and unwanted material. A manual belt supports inspection but does not establish automatic sorting, shelling efficiency or colour sensing.
Dewatering: match drainage to pods or beans
Intact pods and loose beans need different retention and discharge checks. A cooked route also needs a separately engineered cooling and clean-handling arrangement. Confirm free-water removal without seed breakage; no generic leafy spin cycle or thermal safety result is prescribed.
Agree the free-water and damage assessment after a realistic hold, then check the next transfer and doser. Surface-water removal differs from thermal drying, cooking and sterilisation.
Packaging: keep raw and cooked pack briefs separate

KRONEN FLEX L
General packaging-family reference. Confirm the actual edamame feeder, doser, pack and seals. It does not establish whole-product fit, tray feeding, a MAP recipe or shelf life.
Whole pods need a different feeder from loose beans. Confirm the supplied ingredient state, temperature, doser and pack. The general bagger reference does not establish frozen packing, a cooking process or a validated ready-to-eat claim.
If MAP is proposed, obtain the exact gas-handling hardware, film, seals and distribution brief. A general bagger does not establish a gas recipe, shelf life or every optional configuration.
Distinguish cooked-pod shelling from plant depodding
PSS links this P-478 demonstration on its current edamame-sheller page. Its FAQ specifies boiled edamame as the standard input and asks customers to consult about raw beans. The equipment photo below is the smaller P-78 variant. Neither reference establishes raw-pod suitability or removal of pods from branches. Compare separate bean and empty-pod collection with your actual cooked input.

Prepare a edamame equipment trial brief
- Bring representative input: variety, maturity, size, incoming condition and seasonal variation.
- Show accepted and rejected samples: retained skin, leaf, stem, head or cut form, useful rework and finished pack.
- Record useful output: trim/peel loss, damage, fines, missed defects, free water and rejected packs.
- Test interfaces: product supports, drops, screens, drainage, dose control, stops and restart.
- Confirm supplied configuration: safe access, guards, tooling, water circuits, utilities, cleaning and training.
Questions before choosing edamame equipment
Can the PSS boiled-edamame reference be assumed to shell raw beans?
No. PSS says the standard application is boiled beans and asks users to consult it for raw input. Request the correct actual input-state trial.
