Water chestnut processing equipment

Separate washing muddy corms, removing buds and roots, and removing the side skin.

Crop guide · Water chestnut preprocessing

Start with the retained product

This guide concerns Chinese water chestnut, Eleocharis dulcis: an edible corm, not tree chestnuts or horned water caltrops. A commercial washing application list and a published peeling prototype provide different evidence. A research prototype is not a confirmed currently supplied production machine; hard-nut shelling footage is not corm-peeling evidence.

Compare washing, trimming or peeling, cutting, sorting, dewatering and packaging below. Attributed manufacturer images explain equipment roles. General family references require the actual crop configuration and a representative trial.

Choose the finished-product route

Skin-on corms

Pre-clean → wash → remove specified roots/buds → inspect → drain → pack.

Retain side skin when that is the intended product.

Peeled whole corms

Wash → bud/root removal → side peeling → inspect → rinse/drain → pack.

Specify all three removal duties and retained flesh.

Slices or dice

Prepare peeled corms → supported cutting → remove fragments → drain → dose.

Small round corms need support.

Agree pre-cleaning, trimming, cutting and final-wash order for the incoming material and intended use. These routes are specification aids, not universal process settings.

Washing: retain small round corms

Chenyue root brush washing and peeling machine
Chenyue · Manufacturer equipment reference; root brush family, not a water-chestnut peeling trial

Chenyue

Chenyue root brush family. Lotus is a listed application; for water chestnut this is a layout reference, not an identified corm-peeling trial or proof of bud/root removal.

Bango lists water chestnut in its washing/preservation-line applications. Trial retention at screens, brush gaps and discharge. The Chenyue brush-family photo and lotus-root film explain related root-washing layout only: they are not an identified corm run or proof of water-chestnut peeling.

Include water filling and management, draining, rinse arrangements and cleaning access in the quotation. No chemical dose, microbial reduction or ready-to-eat result is established by a machine image or application list.

Trimming: specify three removal duties

KRONEN manual preparation table with blue boards and a central waste chute
KRONEN · Manufacturer workstation photograph; general preparation

KRONEN

KRONEN supported manual preparation with separate waste collection. Define retained water chestnut tissue before selecting automation; this is not an automatic trimmer.

Show the bud, root end and side skin on accepted samples. A primary research paper describes a combined prototype with cutting and side-peeling mechanisms. It explains separate tasks; its experimental results are not adopted as a supplier guarantee or attributed to the pictured root brush peeler.

Cutting: support each corm before cutting

KRONEN GS 10-2 belt cutting machine and infeed conveyor
KRONEN GS 10-2 · Manufacturer equipment reference

KRONEN GS 10-2

KRONEN general cutting-family reference, separate from any other maker in the film. Trial actual water chestnut support, orientation and supplied tooling.

Round peeled corms can roll ahead of a blade. Request the actual feed support and tooling for whole pieces, rounds or dice. Compare fragments and retained pieces. The general cutter image does not prove automatic orientation or a dedicated corm attachment.

Sorting: inspect side skin and ends separately

Herbort blue-belt inspection conveyor in a workshop
Herbort Inspection Belt 85 · Manufacturer workshop photograph; manual inspection reference

Herbort Inspection Belt 85

Herbort manual inspection reference. Arrange actual water chestnut surfaces for viewing; no automatic turning, optical grading or internal-defect detection is inferred.

Present peeled corms so residual skin and end material are visible. Record useful flesh in each waste stream. A manual inspection belt does not establish complete peeling, hidden-defect detection or a numerical useful yield.

Dewatering: keep small pieces on the drainage screen

Check retention of the smallest accepted dice and whole corms at outlets. Separate free-water removal from drying a shelf-stable ingredient. Agree the hold and next transfer before evaluating residual water.

Agree the free-water and damage assessment after a realistic hold, then check the next transfer and doser. Surface-water removal differs from thermal drying, cooking and sterilisation.

Packaging: separate whole-corm and diced-product dosing

KRONEN FLEX L vertical bagging machine
KRONEN FLEX L · Manufacturer equipment reference; feeding, pack and options need confirmation

KRONEN FLEX L

General bagging-family reference. Confirm actual water chestnut feeding, portion, film and seals; no crop-specific doser, gas recipe or shelf-life result is established.

Wet dice and whole corms have different bridging and seal-contamination risks. Test the chosen portion and pack. Vacuum packaging does not itself create a preserved or ready-to-eat product; downstream treatment requires a separate brief.

If MAP is proposed, obtain the exact gas-handling hardware, film, seals and distribution brief. A general bagger does not establish a gas recipe, shelf life or every optional configuration.

See wet brush contact on lotus-root segments

Bango shows actual lotus roots. Watch rolling contact and spray access, then inspect your cut channels separately. For the water-chestnut page this is a related root-washing layout reference only: lotus is shown, not an identified corm trial, bud/root cutter or corm peeler.

Bango Machinery · Official manufacturer footage

  • Around 0:00: Rhizome segments rest and tumble over dark bristled rollers under visible water spray.

Current manufacturer links and source identity were checked. Confirm the offered version and configuration separately from historical demonstration footage. Original English watch notes provide a text alternative; no full transcript is reproduced. Playback is on YouTube. No crop capacity, yield, cleaning, damage or shelf-life guarantee is inferred from the film.

Prepare a water chestnut equipment trial brief

  1. Bring representative input: variety, maturity, size, incoming condition and seasonal variation.
  2. Show accepted and rejected samples: retained skin, leaf, stem, head or cut form, useful rework and finished pack.
  3. Record useful output: trim/peel loss, damage, fines, missed defects, free water and rejected packs.
  4. Test interfaces: product supports, drops, screens, drainage, dose control, stops and restart.
  5. Confirm supplied configuration: safe access, guards, tooling, water circuits, utilities, cleaning and training.

Questions before choosing water chestnut equipment

Can a chestnut sheller be specified from its English name alone?

No. Verify Eleocharis dulcis input and actual corm-peeling evidence. Tree-chestnut shellers and water-caltrop machines perform different duties.
