Plum processing equipment

Separate whole-fruit grading, pitted pieces and puree preparation; each retains a different product.

Crop guide · Plum preprocessing

Start with the retained product

Plum size, shape and stone attachment affect the equipment brief. A fresh-market sorter should preserve intact fruit; an ingredient line must remove stones before further cutting or reduction. UNITEC describes dedicated plum handling and packing. CTI also lists plums for its multi-fruit coring family, with actual cultivar and tooling still to be agreed.

Compare washing, trimming or peeling, cutting, sorting, dewatering and packaging below. Attributed manufacturer images explain equipment roles. General family references require the actual crop configuration and a representative trial.

Choose the finished-product route

Whole plums

Inspect → configured cleaning → grade → surface-water removal → supported packing.

Specify the accepted skin appearance and handling marks.

Pitted halves or pieces

Clean → present individually → pit or core → inspect → collect.

Compare retained flesh, cavity and stone fragments.

Puree or filling ingredients

Prepare fruit → remove stones → inspect → reduce → transfer to the next process.

Stone removal comes before a fine-reduction machine; heating and preservation are separate.

Agree pre-cleaning, trimming, cutting and final-wash order for the incoming material and intended use. These routes are specification aids, not universal process settings.

Washing: match washing to the accepted surface

KRONEN HEWA 3800

KRONEN washing-family reference. Agree actual plum handling, water circuits and supported discharge in a representative trial.

Bring samples showing the desired skin finish. Compare gentle spray, immersion or other proposed handling with the actual debris load and downstream use. Evaluate rubbing and marks after transfer. The general washer photo is not evidence of a cultivar-specific programme.

Trimming: define stems, skin and stone retention

KRONEN

KRONEN manual preparation workstation. Use accepted plum samples to define retained tissue and waste; this is not an automatic peeling or destemming system.

Whole packs normally keep the stone; ingredient routes remove it. Write down whether skin is retained in halves or puree. If peeling is requested, obtain a separate peeling trial rather than treating a corer as a peeler.

Cutting: choose useful pieces rather than only nominal pit removal

CTI Multi Fruit Coring

CTI lists nectarines and plums for this core-removal family. Compare the cavity, retained flesh and actual stone condition; the inspected film shows peaches.

Compare splitting, dedicated pitting and core removal against the desired half. CTI names plums in the family scope, but the inspected film shows peach material. Ask for trials with small and large plums, different firmness and difficult stones; measure useful flesh and rework.

Sorting: grade intact fruit before checking prepared pieces

Herbort Inspection Belt 85

Herbort manual inspection conveyor. Present whole or prepared plum for viewing; automatic stone-fragment detection is a separate specification.

UNITEC describes plum sorting with variety-specific packing. Define size and external-defect classes for whole fruit. After pitting, inspect the cut cavity and residual stone separately. The illustrated manual conveyor assists viewing; it is not an automatic pit detector.

Dewatering: separate free water from puree concentration

Drain whole or cut fruit to the next equipment requirement. Assess soft flesh, pooled juice and discharge height. Puree concentration or thermal drying changes the product and requires additional machinery; it is not a drainage setting.

Packaging: keep size classes and processing lots identifiable

KRONEN FLEX L · Manufacturer equipment reference; feeding, pack and options need confirmation

KRONEN FLEX L

KRONEN FLEX L packaging-family reference. Confirm the actual fruit feeder, portion and package; trays, cartons and liquid filling require their own interfaces.

Specify trays, punnets, cartons or ingredient portions, including the largest plum and softest acceptable fruit. Check fill drops and compression. The pictured general bagger is a packaging reference; the actual feed and pack must be demonstrated with plums.

Compare the core cavity with the flesh you want to retain

CTI names nectarines and plums in the Multi Fruit Coring family scope. The inspected film shows peach material: use it to understand the coring concept and the resulting cavity, then ask for actual nectarine or plum trials. Compare useful flesh and residual stone material; no yield or fragment-removal guarantee is adopted.

Prepare a plum equipment trial brief

  1. Bring representative input: variety, maturity, size, incoming condition and seasonal variation.
  2. Show accepted and rejected samples: retained skin, leaf, stem, head or cut form, useful rework and finished pack.
  3. Record useful output: trim/peel loss, damage, fines, missed defects, free water and rejected packs.
  4. Test interfaces: product supports, drops, screens, drainage, dose control, stops and restart.
  5. Confirm supplied configuration: safe access, guards, tooling, water circuits, utilities, cleaning and training.

Questions before choosing plum equipment

Is a whole-plum grader also a pitting machine?

No. Grading classifies intact fruit. Pitting, cut-product inspection and any further reduction are additional operations with separate acceptance samples.
