Membrane trials & selectivity

Define the membrane duty, stream composition and performance over a representative run.

Define retention and permeate requirements

  • State the actual feed and components to retain or pass.
  • Define the composition and downstream use of retentate and permeate separately.
  • Identify membrane chemistry, module arrangement and pretreatment in the offer.
  • Agree flux, selectivity and recovery measurements over a representative period.
  • Include fouling, cleaning, product change and membrane replacement in the comparison.

Compare installed systems on the same basis

Membrane area, nominal retention, pump flow and permeate production describe different measures. Agree inlet conditions and operating boundaries with the supplier, then compare the run profile and accepted streams rather than an isolated initial reading.

Questions to settle before a quotation

  • Which test feed and time period support scale-up?
  • How are changing flux, stream composition and cleaning recovery recorded?
  • Who supplies pretreatment, pumps, instruments, cleaning and downstream handling?

Ask bidders to state trial material, accepted output, losses, utilities, changeover time and scope exclusions in writing. Compare the offered configuration using the same recipe and acceptance criteria.

Common questions

Are all membrane processes interchangeable?

Microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis address different duties. Confirm the chosen process against the actual feed and accepted stream composition.
