Crop guide · Grapefruit preprocessing
Start with the retained product
Grapefruit creates a different size and rind-removal brief from small mandarins. Define whole fruit, peeled flesh, prepared segments or juice before selecting equipment. UNITEC publishes grapefruit grading references, while JBT lists grapefruit in its extraction scope. The orange film and mandarin photos are related handling examples, not a confirmed grapefruit line.
Compare washing, trimming or peeling, cutting, sorting, dewatering and packaging below. Attributed manufacturer images explain equipment roles. General family references require the actual crop configuration and a representative trial.
Choose the finished-product route
Whole fresh fruit
Receive → inspect → configured washing → grade → remove surface water → pack.
Peeling, cutting and extraction are bypassed.
Prepared peel or flesh
Clean whole fruit → define retained peel, pith or flesh → prepare/cut → inspect → portion.
Zesting and complete peeling make different products.
Juice preparation
Clean → size/present for the selected extractor → extract → separate peel, seeds and pulp as specified.
Finishing, preservation and liquid filling are separate downstream duties.
Agree pre-cleaning, trimming, cutting and final-wash order for the incoming material and intended use. These routes are specification aids, not universal process settings.
Washing: clean the surface before opening the fruit
Use the largest accepted grapefruit when checking clearances, supports and transfers. Compare surface cleaning and rind marks with the actual incoming material. Include water handling and cleaning access; a smaller-citrus grading image does not prove washer fit.
Trimming: specify which part of the peel is retained

KRONEN
KRONEN manual preparation workstation. Use accepted grapefruit samples to define retained tissue and waste; this is not an automatic peeling or destemming system.
Show how much rind, white pith and membrane may remain. Surface zest removal differs from complete peeling, and neither automatically delivers clean segments. A preparation table illustrates manual product definition; obtain dedicated grapefruit trials before selecting automated removal tools.
Cutting: choose slices, segments or extraction

KRONEN GS 10-2
KRONEN supported cutting-family reference. Confirm preparation, fruit support, blade and desired cut with actual grapefruit; segment separation and extraction are distinct duties.
Whole packs bypass cutting. For flesh products, agree segment boundaries, membranes, seeds and juice leakage. Check that proposed cutting clearances accept the actual prepared fruit. Juice extraction requires a separately sized citrus machine; JBT names grapefruit, but the current offered configuration still needs confirmation.
Sorting: define classes before choosing sensors

UNITEC UNICAL 600
UNITEC mandarin handling photograph. For grapefruit, confirm actual fruit dimensions, supports and grade decisions; related layout is not an identical supplied line.
UNITEC describes grapefruit sorting. Agree size, shape, colour and required defects, including support through grade discharge. The mandarin sorter photograph illustrates the family layout only; it cannot establish large-fruit clearance or grapefruit internal-quality measurement.
Dewatering: remove surface water for the next operation
Assess free water after washing and the planned hold, especially at fruit contact points. Prepared segments need gentle supported drainage with a separate assessment of leaking juice. Removing rinse water does not concentrate juice or establish a preserved-product process.
Packaging: match the packer to whole fruit or ingredients

UNITEC citrus collection
Sorted citrus collection before final packing. Confirm the actual grapefruit package, filler and transfer height; this is not a complete sealer.
Whole grapefruit needs suitable carton or tray geometry and low-damage transfer. Prepared flesh requires a dedicated portioner and container; juice requires liquid filling. The citrus outfeed photograph explains sorted-fruit collection before packing, not the supplied grapefruit filler.
See how whole oranges reach the bin-filling interface
UNITEC shows a historical orange processing and sorting line. Use it to compare fruit presentation and discharge interfaces. For lime and grapefruit, this is a related citrus-handling reference rather than an identified crop trial; their size, shape and offered supports need separate confirmation. Customer promotional productivity claims are not adopted.

No crop capacity, yield, cleaning, damage or shelf-life guarantee is inferred from the film.
Prepare a grapefruit equipment trial brief
- Bring representative input: variety, maturity, size, incoming condition and seasonal variation.
- Show accepted and rejected samples: retained skin, leaf, stem, head or cut form, useful rework and finished pack.
- Record useful output: trim/peel loss, damage, fines, missed defects, free water and rejected packs.
- Test interfaces: product supports, drops, screens, drainage, dose control, stops and restart.
- Confirm supplied configuration: safe access, guards, tooling, water circuits, utilities, cleaning and training.
Questions before choosing grapefruit equipment
Can one citrus machine deliver whole packs, peeled segments and bottled juice?
These are separate routes. Agree the retained product first, then specify the washing, preparation, extraction, finishing and packing interfaces required for that route.
