Sweet orange processing equipment

Compare intact fruit packing with peel, flesh and juice routes before buying a line.

Crop guide · Sweet orange preprocessing

Start with the retained product

Start with the destination: whole oranges, prepared flesh, peel ingredients or juice. UNITEC publishes orange grading references, while JBT describes a separate citrus extraction system. A grading line and a juice extractor solve different parts of the process; neither should be presented as a complete peeled-segment line.

Compare washing, trimming or peeling, cutting, sorting, dewatering and packaging below. Attributed manufacturer images explain equipment roles. General family references require the actual crop configuration and a representative trial.

Choose the finished-product route

Whole fresh fruit

Receive → inspect → configured washing → grade → remove surface water → pack.

Peeling, cutting and extraction are bypassed.

Prepared peel or flesh

Clean whole fruit → define retained peel, pith or flesh → prepare/cut → inspect → portion.

Zesting and complete peeling make different products.

Juice preparation

Clean → size/present for the selected extractor → extract → separate peel, seeds and pulp as specified.

Finishing, preservation and liquid filling are separate downstream duties.

Agree pre-cleaning, trimming, cutting and final-wash order for the incoming material and intended use. These routes are specification aids, not universal process settings.

Washing: clean the surface before opening the fruit

Inspect surface debris, the incoming coating condition and the intended use of the peel. Trial brush or spray handling with the actual orange size and finish. Include clean-water provision, drainage and accessible cleaning points. Washing is not the same as applying a market-specific coating treatment.

Trimming: specify which part of the peel is retained

KRONEN

KRONEN manual preparation workstation. Use accepted sweet orange samples to define retained tissue and waste; this is not an automatic peeling or destemming system.

Whole-fruit packs retain the rind. For prepared flesh, define whether white pith and membranes are accepted. Zest production removes a surface layer rather than delivering a fully peeled orange; PND describes adjustable citrus zest removal as a separate duty. Bring an accepted peel and flesh sample.

Cutting: choose slices, segments or extraction

KRONEN GS 10-2 · Manufacturer equipment reference

KRONEN GS 10-2

KRONEN supported cutting-family reference. Confirm preparation, fruit support, blade and desired cut with actual sweet orange; segment separation and extraction are distinct duties.

Specify rounds, wedges or prepared flesh before selecting a cutter. A general supported belt cutter is shown as a family reference, with fruit preparation and tooling still to be confirmed. Juice routes instead need a citrus extractor and appropriate fruit presentation; the JBT reference lists oranges, not a pre-cut segment packer.

Sorting: define classes before choosing sensors

UNITEC UNICAL 600

UNITEC mandarin handling photograph. For sweet orange, confirm actual fruit dimensions, supports and grade decisions; related layout is not an identical supplied line.

Agree diameter, colour and visible-defect classes. UNITEC describes orange sorting, and the official film shows a historical orange line. The mandarin sorter photo illustrates a related citrus-handling layout; it is not the identical installed orange system or proof of a chosen sensor package.

Dewatering: remove surface water for the next operation

Remove free rinse water before the chosen pack, label or permitted coating step. Assess contact marks and pooled water after transfer. If a heated or unheated air stage is proposed, obtain its actual configuration; no drying temperature, time or storage-life result is prescribed here.

Packaging: match the packer to whole fruit or ingredients

UNITEC citrus collection

Sorted citrus collection before final packing. Confirm the actual sweet orange package, filler and transfer height; this is not a complete sealer.

Whole oranges may need nets, bags, trays or cartons, each with its own size and weight presentation. The shown citrus outfeed photograph illustrates sorted-fruit collection before final packing. Prepared flesh requires a different doser and sealer; juice requires liquid filling after the specified finishing and preservation process.

See how whole oranges reach the bin-filling interface

UNITEC shows a historical orange processing and sorting line. Use it to compare fruit presentation and discharge interfaces. For lime and grapefruit, this is a related citrus-handling reference rather than an identified crop trial; their size, shape and offered supports need separate confirmation. Customer promotional productivity claims are not adopted.

Prepare a sweet orange equipment trial brief

  1. Bring representative input: variety, maturity, size, incoming condition and seasonal variation.
  2. Show accepted and rejected samples: retained skin, leaf, stem, head or cut form, useful rework and finished pack.
  3. Record useful output: trim/peel loss, damage, fines, missed defects, free water and rejected packs.
  4. Test interfaces: product supports, drops, screens, drainage, dose control, stops and restart.
  5. Confirm supplied configuration: safe access, guards, tooling, water circuits, utilities, cleaning and training.

Questions before choosing sweet orange equipment

Can one citrus machine deliver whole packs, peeled segments and bottled juice?

These are separate routes. Agree the retained product first, then specify the washing, preparation, extraction, finishing and packing interfaces required for that route.
