Crop guide · Mandarin preprocessing
Start with the retained product
Mandarins should be specified by actual cultivar and destination rather than by a single broad market label. Whole fresh packs retain the peel; segment ingredients remove it; juice preparation uses a separate extraction route. UNITEC explicitly describes mandarin and clementine grading and configurable packing.
Compare washing, trimming or peeling, cutting, sorting, dewatering and packaging below. Attributed manufacturer images explain equipment roles. General family references require the actual crop configuration and a representative trial.
Choose the finished-product route
Whole fresh fruit
Receive → inspect → configured washing → grade → remove surface water → pack.
Peeling, cutting and extraction are bypassed.
Prepared peel or flesh
Clean whole fruit → define retained peel, pith or flesh → prepare/cut → inspect → portion.
Zesting and complete peeling make different products.
Juice preparation
Clean → size/present for the selected extractor → extract → separate peel, seeds and pulp as specified.
Finishing, preservation and liquid filling are separate downstream duties.
Agree pre-cleaning, trimming, cutting and final-wash order for the incoming material and intended use. These routes are specification aids, not universal process settings.
Washing: clean the surface before opening the fruit
Bring the softest acceptable fruit and representative loose peel. Compare supported washing, contact surfaces and discharge without squeezing the fruit against guides. Define incoming dirt and accepted appearance. The sorting photographs are not washing-machine evidence; washing equipment must be selected and tried separately.
Trimming: specify which part of the peel is retained

KRONEN
KRONEN manual preparation workstation. Use accepted mandarin samples to define retained tissue and waste; this is not an automatic peeling or destemming system.
Decide whether the finished product retains the peel. Loose fresh segments need a peeling and membrane specification; surface zest removal is a different operation. A manual preparation table illustrates the retained-product decision, not an automatic mandarin peeling line.
Cutting: choose slices, segments or extraction

KRONEN GS 10-2
KRONEN supported cutting-family reference. Confirm preparation, fruit support, blade and desired cut with actual mandarin; segment separation and extraction are distinct duties.
Whole mandarins bypass cutting. For segments or pieces, define accepted membranes, seeds and leaking juice before selecting preparation tools. The general cutter photo is not an automatic segment separator. A proposed extractor must match the actual fruit and size; its juice stream is separate from intact segments.
Sorting: define classes before choosing sensors

UNITEC UNICAL 600
UNITEC mandarin handling photograph. For mandarin, confirm actual fruit dimensions, supports and grade decisions; related layout is not an identical supplied line.
UNITEC describes size and quality selection for mandarins and clementines. Compare small-fruit retention, individual presentation and class discharge. The historical official mandarin film helps explain supported lanes; agree the currently supplied sorter and sensor configuration separately.
Dewatering: remove surface water for the next operation
Check water trapped at the peel and fruit contacts after washing. Specify supported drainage or an air stage that preserves accepted peel condition. Surface-water removal is not dried-mandarin production and should not be treated as a thermal recipe.
Packaging: match the packer to whole fruit or ingredients

UNITEC citrus collection
Sorted citrus collection before final packing. Confirm the actual mandarin package, filler and transfer height; this is not a complete sealer.
Whole-fruit packs need gentle collection and controlled drops. UNITEC describes configurable automated or weight-based packing; the pictured outfeed is an interface, not a complete sealer. Fresh peeled segments and juice require different container, dosing and preservation briefs.
See collection and crate handling after mandarin grading
This historical UNITEC mandarin demonstration explains whole-fruit handling rather than peeling or juice extraction. It is directly relevant to a mandarin packhouse and a related reference for specified tangerines and citrus hybrids. Confirm the current offered machinery, actual cultivar and accepted handling marks separately.

Prepare a mandarin equipment trial brief
- Bring representative input: variety, maturity, size, incoming condition and seasonal variation.
- Show accepted and rejected samples: retained skin, leaf, stem, head or cut form, useful rework and finished pack.
- Record useful output: trim/peel loss, damage, fines, missed defects, free water and rejected packs.
- Test interfaces: product supports, drops, screens, drainage, dose control, stops and restart.
- Confirm supplied configuration: safe access, guards, tooling, water circuits, utilities, cleaning and training.
Questions before choosing mandarin equipment
Can one citrus machine deliver whole packs, peeled segments and bottled juice?
These are separate routes. Agree the retained product first, then specify the washing, preparation, extraction, finishing and packing interfaces required for that route.
