MAINCA compact bandsaw with its complete table and blade column
Compact bandsaw · MAINCA manufacturer reference

Buyer overview · reviewed 4 November 2026

Choose the job before choosing the saw.

A butcher cutting soup bones, a factory portioning frozen fish and a slaughter line splitting carcasses need different equipment. Start with the product, its temperature and the required cut. Then decide how the product is held and fed.

Nine useful configurations, three blade-motion principles. The groups below are a buying framework, not an official count of every machine on the market. Table size, automation, angle cutting and carcass duty overlap.

MAINCA compact BC range equipment reference for countertop bandsaw
MAINCA compact BC range · manufacturer image

01 · Countertop bandsaw

How it works. A motor drives a continuous band around two wheels. The operator presents the product on a compact table, with a thickness stop and product pusher.

Where it fits. Small preparation rooms and butcher counters handling bone-in portions or frozen cuts. Confirm the product fits both the height and throat opening.

What to look at. Look at the short column, exposed working section of the band and compact table. Manual feed still requires trained handling; a small footprint does not make a saw a domestic appliance.

MAINCA BC-2800 floor bandsaw with supported work table and tall column
MAINCA BC-2800 · manufacturer image

02 · Fixed-table floor bandsaw

How it works. The blade still runs in a continuous loop. A larger frame and supported work table accommodate larger cuts; the operator controls the product feed.

Where it fits. Butcheries and meat-preparation rooms needing a dedicated workstation. Compare usable product clearance and cleaning access, rather than motor power alone.

What to look at. The legs and taller column distinguish the floor layout. The pictured BC-2800 has a published 352 mm cutting height; Kolbe K430 publishes 403 mm. These are opening dimensions, not kg/hour ratings.

Kolbe K330RS equipment reference for sliding or rolling-table bandsaw
Kolbe K330RS · manufacturer image

03 · Sliding or rolling-table bandsaw

How it works. A moving carriage supports the cut while it travels past the continuously moving band. The operator still loads, positions and advances the product.

Where it fits. Larger primals or repeated cuts where a moving support is useful. Check carriage travel, product restraint, available space and handling of the final small piece.

What to look at. Find the carriage and rails around the cutting table. A sliding table is a feed arrangement, not an automatic portioning cycle. MAINCA also lists a half-sliding-table option on BC-2800.

Astech SRA Compact equipment reference
Astech SRA Compact · manufacturer image

04 · Enclosed automatic thickness saw

How it works. A controlled feed and product-holding arrangement move the product through a band-saw cutting cycle. The recipe defines cut thickness; loading, outfeed and changeover still matter.

Where it fits. Repeated cuts of a specified product, especially frozen meat or fish. Astech makes fresh-product suitability conditional on a prior study.

What to look at. The enclosure, loading opening and control panel are visible. Compare this arrangement with the exposed table of a manual saw; do not infer that an enclosure eliminates every hazard.

Astech SRA-D equipment reference for automatic angle-cutting bandsaw
Astech SRA-D · manufacturer image

05 · Automatic angle-cutting bandsaw

How it works. The cutting unit can tilt, changing the angle of the cut through the product. This changes the cut face and portion presentation while maintaining a programmed cutting sequence.

Where it fits. Processors needing an angled presentation instead of a square cross-cut. Test product holding, bone orientation and usable end pieces with the actual raw material.

What to look at. Look for the fenced cutting area and the product feed/outfeed. Astech publishes a tilt option up to 50 degrees. This capability does not imply fixed-weight portions.

Astech PW-SAW equipment reference for scanning and target-weight saw
Astech PW-SAW · manufacturer image

06 · Scanning and target-weight saw

How it works. A scanner and control system calculate cuts from target-weight and thickness parameters, then coordinate feeding and the band-saw process.

Where it fits. Retail portions where weight giveaway matters. Compare accepted pieces within tolerance, rejected ends, scan assumptions and outfeed integration.

What to look at. Notice the longer enclosed line and conveyor interfaces. Constant thickness and constant weight are different goals: irregular cross-sections make equal-thickness pieces vary in weight.

Jarvis Wellsaw 404 equipment reference
Jarvis Wellsaw 404 · manufacturer image

07 · Handheld reciprocating bone saw

How it works. A short straight blade moves back and forth. The cutting tool is brought to the carcass or primal rather than feeding a piece across a stationary table.

Where it fits. Breaking, trimming and opening duties where a handheld tool fits the workstation. Blade/support combination and the specific duty must be agreed with the supplier.

What to look at. The long straight blade and handheld motor distinguish it from a looped bandsaw. The photograph is a manufacturer model reference, not a demonstration of an approved operating technique.

Jarvis SEC 180-5 equipment reference for handheld circular breaking saw
Jarvis SEC 180-5 · manufacturer image

08 · Handheld circular breaking saw

How it works. A round toothed blade rotates continuously. The guarded cutting head is moved along the required breaking cut, with depth limited by the selected blade and head configuration.

Where it fits. Ribbing, quartering and other defined carcass-breaking operations. This is a different workstation from a countertop retail portioning saw.

What to look at. Find the round blade housing and two-hand tool layout. The manufacturer lists a 66 mm adjustable cut depth for this model; it is not the opening size of a table bandsaw.

Jarvis BUSTER 5 equipment reference
Jarvis BUSTER 5 · manufacturer image

09 · Dedicated carcass-splitting saw

How it works. A purpose-built cutting head follows the length of a carcass. Depending on the system, the blade may be a band or a circular design and handling may be manual, assisted or robotic.

Where it fits. Slaughter-line splitting. Check carcass species, suspension, tool support, sanitation interfaces and the complete line arrangement.

What to look at. The pictured BUSTER 5 has a long band-saw head instead of a retail work table. Carcass splitting is an application group that overlaps blade types, not a fourth blade-motion principle.

Three cutting motions — and one important control difference

Continuous band

A narrow loop runs around wheels. The working section passes through the product; guides and blade tension support tracking. Countertop, floor and enclosed automatic machines can all use this principle.

Back-and-forth blade

A straight blade reciprocates. The tool reaches a particular breaking cut without needing a large table opening. Compare blade support, reach and the intended carcass duty.

Rotating disc

A circular blade cuts at its rim. The head, guard and disc determine the available depth and access. It belongs to a defined breaking or splitting station.

A thickness stop is not a weighing system. A manual stop sets distance. A servo recipe can repeat distance. Target-weight cutting additionally needs a method for estimating or measuring the portion and checking the result.

A practical production route

  1. Define the incoming productSpecies, bone orientation, dimensions, fresh/frozen state and measured temperature range.
  2. Hold, feed and cutMatch the blade, clearance, support and feed concept to that material.
  3. Inspect and transferCheck cut surface, bone debris, yield, portion weight and the next packaging step.

Blade selection, cleaning, guarding and operation must follow the machine-specific instructions and a trained site procedure. This overview is a selection guide, not an operating or maintenance manual.

Where the equipment is developing

  • Controlled feeding and enclosure: the Astech SRA range illustrates moving from operator-fed tables to programmed cutting cycles.
  • Weight-led portioning: PW-SAW adds scanning and target-weight control rather than relying only on thickness.
  • More deliberate presentation: SRA-D adds angle cutting for a different portion cross-section.
  • Intervention and cleaning: Kolbe lists blade-stop technology and removable cleaning components; Jarvis offers task-specific breaking and splitting tools. Confirm which features belong to the quoted configuration.

These are directions visible in the reviewed catalogues, not forecasts of growth or a claim that every buyer needs the most automated machine. Bizerba's native FK32 page marks it discontinued; historical offers should be compared as such.
